Garmin has begun seeding a beta update, version 12.12, for its flagship Edge 1050 cycling computer. This phased rollout, currently reaching approximately 20% of users, allows Garmin to gather valuable real-world feedback before pushing the update to a wider audience. The update focuses on refining the user experience, addressing some nagging bugs, and enhancing the device’s overall functionality.
Change Log 12.12
- Added light color mode glances for glance list
- Fixed max speed/cadence getting cut off in certain graphical data field configurations
- Fixed dark mode spectator messages having invisible text
- Fixed graphical data field selection on GCM for data screen setup
- Fixed bugs with map icons

One of the key areas of improvement lies in the “glance” feature, a quick-access view of key metrics. Version 12.12 introduces a light color mode for these glances, aiming to improve visibility in varying lighting conditions. This seemingly small tweak could make a significant difference for cyclists who rely on these glances during their rides.
Garmin also appears to be tackling some display inconsistencies. Several users have reported issues with speed and cadence data being truncated in certain graphical data field configurations. This update aims to resolve these display quirks, ensuring cyclists have accurate and complete information at a glance. Furthermore, the update addresses a visibility issue with dark mode spectator messages, which were reportedly appearing as invisible text.
Beyond display enhancements, version 12.12 focuses on under-the-hood improvements. Bug fixes related to map icons, electronic shifting data field sizing, and the integration of Connect IQ glances are included. Notably, the update adds light mode backgrounds for Connect IQ glances, ensuring visual consistency across the user interface. These fixes demonstrate Garmin’s commitment to addressing user feedback and ensuring a smooth and reliable experience.
The beta rollout strategy allows Garmin to identify and address any unforeseen issues before a full release. Users with a Wi-Fi connection enabled on their Edge 1050 can check for the update by navigating to Main Menu > System > About > Check For Updates. It’s crucial to remember that this is a beta version, and users may encounter unexpected behavior. Garmin encourages beta testers to report any issues they experience, contributing to the refinement process.
