Garmin Descent MK3 receives new stable update 19.49: New features & bug fixes

Garmin has begun a phased rollout of its latest software update, version 19.49, for the Descent MK3 series of dive computers. Currently reaching approximately 50% of users, the update introduces a host of new features and improvements tailored for both recreational and technical divers, with full deployment expected in the coming weeks.

This update significantly expands the Descent MK3’s capabilities for technical diving, adding crucial data fields such as FiO2, Diluent PO2, Raw Ceiling, Gradient Factors (including TTS+5, TTSâ–³5, and Bailout TTS), Gas Density, GF99, ATR, and GCR. These additions provide technical divers with more granular control and information during complex dives.

Beyond technical diving, the 19.49 update also caters to freediving enthusiasts with the introduction of a dedicated Pool Apnea activity mode. This new mode tracks and analyzes performance metrics specific to breath-hold diving in pool environments. Further enhancing the user experience, Garmin has implemented an Auto Dive Snooze feature, streamlining the post-dive logging process.

Divers now have the option to enable an Always-On Dive Display mode, accessible through the settings menu (Settings > System > Display > In-Dive > Timeout). This allows for constant visibility of critical dive data. Garmin has also broadened its mobile payment support, integrating Alipay and Weixin Pay into the app list for compatible regions.

The update addresses several key improvements and bug fixes. A clearer messaging system has been implemented for gauge mode lockouts, providing more informative notifications to the user. The dive precheck process has been refined to prevent accidental activation via the palm-press shortcut. Visual enhancements include an improved PacePro minimap and smoother scrolling through the SubWave message list.

Garmin has also tackled a number of technical issues. The low battery alert has been adjusted to prevent triggers during sleep windows. Potential crashes related to saving Tides locations, displaying depth and temperature charts, and navigating the Activity Summary page have been resolved. The start/stop functionality of the pool apnea activity has been stabilized, and inconsistencies in Pool Apnea settings have been corrected. Finally, the update addresses issues with data fields appearing incorrectly and a potential zero value for the gas density data field, along with several potential crashes related to the map, data screen editing, and the Garmin Coach glance.
