Garmin is rolling out a new beta software update version 13.22 for the Fenix 8 series. This update brings a suite of enhancements, headlined by the highly anticipated Passcode Support feature, alongside improvements to solar data tracking and user interface refinements. Owners of the Fenix 8 series (including AMOLED and Solar variants in various sizes), the rugged Enduro 3, and the specialized Fenix E can now experience these new features firsthand.
Security Takes Center Stage with Passcode Protection
Garmin is prioritizing user security with the introduction of Passcode Support. This feature, leaked in recent weeks, allows users to secure their devices with a PIN. Once enabled, the watch will require the PIN to regain access after being removed from the wrist, adding a crucial layer of protection against unauthorized access to personal data and functionality.
Solar Power Gets Smarter with New Data Fields
For solar-powered models, Garmin has enhanced its solar tracking capabilities by adding dedicated Solar Intensity and Accumulation Data Fields. This provides users with more granular insights into their solar charging performance, allowing them to optimize their exposure to sunlight and maximize battery life.
User Experience Enhancements Across the Board
Beyond security and solar improvements, Beta 13.22 delivers a range of user experience enhancements. Haptic vibration has been added to number pad pages, providing tactile feedback for easier navigation. A hint button has been integrated into the Training Load Ratio page, offering guidance for interpreting training data. International users will appreciate the addition of Swedish and Danish layouts to the QWERTY keyboard.
Bug Fixes and Performance Optimizations
Garmin has also addressed several bugs in this release. Issues with the contact list in large font mode delayed Flashlight Active App icon, and incorrect speed/cadence sensor icon have been resolved. The map app now correctly supports round-trip course navigation, and the QWERTY keyboard shift state during password entry has been fixed. Stage cards also benefit from an improved display of the pressed state.
Critical Update for Garmin Connect Mobile
Garmin is urging users to update their Garmin Connect Mobile (GCM) app to version 5.9. This update contains crucial improvements for the Passcode feature that were absent in the previous 5.8 release. Users on older GCM versions may experience issues with certain passcode functionalities. Garmin emphasizes the importance of ensuring the watch is actively Bluetooth-connected to GCM when changing the passcode.
A Word of Caution: Factory Reset and Feature Limitations
Users should be aware that entering the passcode incorrectly too many times will trigger a factory reset, erasing all personal data on the watch. Garmin has indicated that this reset behavior will be removed once all users have updated to GCM v5.9. It’s also worth noting that updating to the beta software will temporarily disable ECG and dive features.
How to Get the Update
The Beta 13.22 update can be manually downloaded by navigating to Main Menu > Settings > System > Software Update > Check For Updates on the compatible Garmin smartwatch. Users are encouraged to review the full release notes on Garmin’s website for a complete overview of the changes.
