Garmin rolls out new beta software update 27.07 for Edge 1040, 840, and 540

Cyclists relying on Garmin’s Edge series are in for a treat, as the tech giant has just unleashed a substantial beta software update, version 27.07, targeting the Edge 1040, Edge 840, and Edge 540 models. This update isn’t just a routine patch; it’s a comprehensive overhaul designed to iron out persistent kinks and introduce highly requested features, promising a smoother, more reliable ride.

Change Log:

  • Added the ability to save a course in the reverse direction
  • Fixed issue where dynamic glance does not update unless the device is rebooted
  • Fixed battery status icon inconsistency in battery low warning prompt
  • Reordered power and HR zones to match Garmin Connect (high to low)
  • Improved gear preset selection to automatically apply a valid configuration when a shifting system reports a non‑standard gear count
  • Fixed GroupRide glance showing 0 riders
  • Fixed issue with sensors displaying improper names
  • Fixed duplicate data screen entry when adding new data screen
  • Fixed manual Wi‑Fi sync incorrectly reporting sync failure
  • Added error prompt for failed software update
  • Fixed POI not showing “add” icon in Course Creator
  • Fixed missing tone when connecting the new sensor
  • Removed Prompted Timer Start Mode tone on non‑data screens
  • Fixed issue with the Accept button in connection prompts
  • Fixed issue with pairing third‑party power meters via Bluetooth
  • Fixed segment deletion in the settings menu
  • Fixed color persistence on the power off page options
  • Fixed other minor issues and improved device stability
  • Fixed issue where ClimbPro datascreen was incorrectly disabled

One of the most anticipated additions is the ability to reverse saved courses, a game-changer for spontaneous route adjustments and exploratory rides. This feature empowers cyclists to effortlessly navigate trails in the opposite direction, opening up new possibilities for adventure and training.

However, the update’s focus extends beyond novel features, addressing a slew of frustrating bugs. Notably, the issue where the dynamic glance failed to update without a full device reboot has been resolved, ensuring real-time data accuracy. Similarly, the inconsistent battery status icon during low battery warnings has been rectified, providing clear and reliable power information.

For performance-oriented riders, Garmin has reordered power and heart rate zones to align seamlessly with Garmin Connect, presenting data in a logical, high-to-low sequence. Gear aficionados will appreciate the improved gear preset selection, which now intelligently applies valid configurations, even when faced with non-standard gear counts from shifting systems.

Communication and connectivity have also seen significant improvements. The perplexing GroupRide glance displaying zero riders has been fixed, restoring accurate group ride information. Sensor management is now more robust, with improper sensor names corrected and duplicate data screen entries eliminated. Moreover, the previously unreliable manual Wi-Fi sync, which often reported false failures, has been stabilized.

Addressing potential user frustrations, Garmin has introduced an error prompt for failed software updates, providing clear feedback and guidance. The POI “add” icon in Course Creator, previously missing, has been reinstated, and the missing tone when connecting new sensors has been restored, enhancing the overall user experience.

Further refinements include the removal of the Prompted Timer Start Mode tone on non-data screens, a fix for the Accept button issue in connection prompts, and improved pairing stability for third-party power meters via Bluetooth. Segment management has also been streamlined with a fix for segment deletion in the settings menu, and the color persistence on power off page options has been corrected. Finally, the update tackles the ClimbPro datascreen being incorrectly disabled, and a host of other minor issues have been resolved, resulting in significantly improved device stability.

To install this crucial update, users with a Wi-Fi network connected to their Edge device can navigate to Main Menu > System > About > Check For Updates. This step ensures that cyclists can quickly and easily benefit from the enhancements and fixes packed into version 27.07, leading to a more reliable and enjoyable riding experience.
